By the end of 1916, all parties to the war were on their knees and there would certainly have had to be a negotiated settlement in 1917 on more or less equal terms. But if that happened, US bankers and arms manufacturers, who were owed a fortune by Britain and France, would not get their money, so the US intervened in the war as a sort of debt collector! Of course, WWI begat Hitler, who begat WWII and the Holocaust. The latter begat Israel. WWI also begat communism, which begat the cold war. Thus, in WWII, the US was merely tried (and failed!) to clean up the mess it made in WWI and the cold war was merely America's attempt to clean up the mess it made in WWII! I'm sure we'll hear more about this as we get closer to 2014!
