Hello Dustin,
Concluding that there should be no drilling in ANWR because BP was deceitful is like saying there should be no driving on the road because someone blatantly broke a speeding law. Comparing our current domestic oil to the world oil market is akin to apples and oranges. If we produce it domestically, and increase the production, we should use it here. It is confusing that you would say oil independence is a pipe-dream, and then tout alternative energy, who's goal IS to free us domesticly of oil dependence.

We have a huge, viable resource availabe to the U.S., and when it comes to BP' negligence, the American people should not be punished or denied because of their actions.

What people fail to realize is that our economy needs to be backed by something in order to make our dollar in the worldwide economy worth anything. The only effective way to do that is drilling for our own oil. What people also don't understand is that our economy can't afford to start investing in technology for alternate energy sources right now. And even if our government found an alternate energy source after spending billions or even trillions to do so, how is anyone going to have the buying power to afford this new energy? Is everyone just supposed to buy electric cars when it's currently not profitable to do so?

Bert,

The fact that BP has been deceitful and self-serving IS a conclusive reason why ANWR should not be drilled. You cite that the North Slope accounts for 16% of our domestic supply of oil; however our domestic supply is an extremely small part of the 75 million barrel-a-day world oil market. Becoming even remotely independent on oil is a pipe-dream. We should instead be focusing on alternative energy.

Mr. Leopold's article failed to address the title he gave it. It emphasised the need to hold BP accountable for the lies and misdeeds it has done, yet it didn't give any conclusive (or even vague) reasons why ANWR should not be drilled. We Alaskans do not condone, nor accept the behaviour of BP in these incidents of negligence, yet with a spill of 201,000 gallons of crude, the worst in the history of oil development in Alaska’s North Slope (that's 40 years of development!), Mr. Leopold does not address the impact of this spill, nor the all reasons for it's cause. As stated, the leak occured because of BP's lack of required maintenance. It was made worse by the fact that the pipeline at that point was buried underground. Why was it buried? Because during construction environmentalists demanded it be buried because they claimed the caribou would refuse to cross under it. It turns out that the caribou didn't care! As for the horrendous biological and environmental destruction caused by the spill--well, it didn't happen. No animals oiled. The crude contained. The land cleaned up. No crisis. Not even close. On the positive side, it brought to light problems that needed to be addressed.

Prudhoe Bay may account for 8% of our domestic supply of oil, but the North Slope accounts for 16%. With ANWR it would be even more.

A more suited title for this article should have been, "Reasons to hold oil companies accountable so we can start drilling in ANWR."
