I can only imagine the lives of people who are cruel to animals. I do enjoy eggs, but mine only come from farmers like Sheila. I have NO problem shelling out the extra dollar or two for organic and cage free eggs. And, Sheila points to a bigger problem than the individual abusers - the average American [or insert your country name here] who wants everything cheap! When consumers STOP buying the cheap, factory farmed animal products and start supporting organics - things will change. Yes, part of the responsibility lies with the producers and abusers, but the bigger responsibility lies with the ravenous, swine-like omnivores (over 60% overweight in America's case) who don't stop to think about what they are shoving in their faces. I dream of a day when the greater part of the world wakes up to the plight of our amazing animal friends; but, I'm not holding my breath for it. As Sheila illustrates, it is more than possible to enjoy animal products AND treat them with respect, but people have to care first.

I have a small flock of organically raised chickens who have never seen a cage and are free to walk outside and enjoy life and retire to a roomy coop when they choose to. They have never been fed anything but organic grains, which means they have never had antibiotics, a common ingredient in chick feed to prevent illness in unsanitary conditions. They get whatever they need and reward me with beautiful eggs that have less cholesterol and more nutrition than commercial eggs, and they will do so for several years.

If you have the opportunity to buy eggs from people like me, don't balk at the price. Organic feed is expensive, as is housing, land for ranging, and fencing. Everything is done by hand by a caring human. The commercial producer spends very little in comparison. Eggs like these are still the best protein buy for your money.

Support local food. Encourage small farming like your life depends on it, because one day it might.

There's been a big switch to free range eggs and chickens here in the UK since two celebrity chefs recently campaigned in TV series to expose the cruelty of battery farming. For a while you couldn't buy a free range chicken such was the demand but one of the largest supermarket chains did a spoiler offering battery chickens for the equivalent of two or three dollars.

I started to watch the video linked in the article but had to turn it off. Dreadful callous and needless cruelty. The workers in these hellholes obviously become dehumanised.

Thank you for this wonderful article. I've been vegan for 13 years, and vegetarian for 21 years (I was supposed to die 21 years ago and as a result i made drastic changes in my diet). I applaud my friends in Mercy For Animals for their investigation. I always hope more people will say "no" to eggs.

I stopped eating chicken 30 years ago when a poultry farmer I know told me they used arsenic laced feed b/c it made the chickens thirsty, they drink more water, plump up faster. The chicken poop contaminated with arsenic ends up in the environment.

Where's the USDA when ya need 'em.
