"How does a man who stole the name of a prophet of Israel have the audacity to say Israel is a dirty word?"

some of us don't believe in prophets, children's fables and santa claus. it is dirty to steal from the millions their land and possessions, oppress them, kill them, make their lives unending hell, all because you claim you have something to do with this alleged santa claus and all in the memory of some alleged santa claus from a million years ago.

Jason,

thanks for a good article. I read a couple of Wright's sermons and listened to one in toto (the infamous God Damn America one) and found nothing profoundly objectionable, though controversial, yes.

I think that what you term 'mob think' is a classic way for groups to avoid contemplating anything controversial. Certainly the mainstream media cannot touch such stuff although they do offer its 'satanic' equivalent, namely controversy expressed as outrage, cynicism, frivolity, spin and suchlike.

I have yet to read an article that goes into many of Wright's points in depth and detail, let alone an intelligent discussion about it. But this is the closest I have seen and for that, again, I thank you.

HP I am not sure who is wright or wrong but I think we are about to find out and who will win probably nobody. 95 degrees in San Francisco in a few day's and then all that snow starts to melt. Yes that is a record. There is still time but so far I don't see it. I will keep trying.

Kudos. Your article is forthcoming in its clarity yet late in emerging to the forefront. Where were you when this news was hot?

So... those folk with a "different interpretation" of Wright, are not holding the correct interpretation from your standpoint; foolish mob thinkers.

You say "... and the possibility of the government’s social engineering of Black communities ..." - And how has that been achieved? Any connection to the "left" do-gooders supplying barely enough section 8 and EBT for those 70% out of wedlock fatherless black projects in poverty on the modern plantation?

My oldest daughter (executive director of a nonprofit NGO) said a few months ago, as we were discussing the hermeneutic skills of white folks - "You know mom, white folks really are clueless aren't they?"

I sighed, yes sweetie, 98% of them.

Jason, I don't know about you, but the last time I checked, looked out the window, ventured out onto the 'mean streets,' the place was full of "emotionally charged mob think," rife with those who don't have a clue as to what a hermeneutical principal is, even as they utter one or kick one in the ribs.
Also didn't notice many black, white or brown people interested in being intellectually interrogated or lectured to regarding black liberation theology. Neither were they interested in having their shortcomings punctuated.
Anywho, that's the word on the street. .

He’s basically saying that American history is filled with unsavory acts and because of that we must hold accountable our politicians, our government, our media, and most of all ourselves and each other.
A truly democratic nation seeking to improve itself would invite debate and discussion between these and other competing worldviews, allowing the best interpretation to shine through. The “best interpretation” would be accurate, well-grounded, justified, explained in detail, capable of withstanding intellectual interrogation, and capable of accounting for as many issues as possible.

It's going to be 95 degrees in San Francisco and yes it will break records. Parts of the North Pole will be ice free this summer. Myanmar the Hurricane and another storm coming to that area. Crops Worldwide starting to be a bit of a problem I could keep witting for an hour and we in this country need more coal fired plants and drive cars that will use all the oil on this planet in just a few years. Yes I guess you could say, The “best interpretation” would be accurate, well-grounded, justified, explained in detail, capable of withstanding intellectual interrogation, and capable of accounting for as many issues as possible.

Jason Del Gandio,

This is an utterly rhetorical post.

While I agree that "we" should be talking, not about Rev. Wright who is only speaking what can be readily found in recent documentation (as well as first hand observation) of American legacy, you are after all in America. "WE" don't do that...talk about such things, that is. Except in the hush of places like DV and some university campuses (that still allow) and some progressive coffee shops (and where outside of NYC, Berkley and San Franscio does one find such a place?).

But if we were to venture down that path, I think, we should not excuse Obama (or any other candidate) from the conversation. To do so emboldens the ultimate captor of the WH a marching order - of forward. Whether through the auspice of neocon or neoliberal tyranny and terror of empire.
