It was with a heavy heart that I heard the news of the passing of Companero Marulanda. I was searching around progressive publications, looking for a eulogy befitting such a great man, but I couldn't find any -- that is until I saw this well-rounded and impressionable piece by Dr. Petras. I am particularly impressed by Dr. Petras' observations about the peculiarities of the Colombian movement versus those of others in the continent, and I am quite humbled by Dr. Petras' dedication in support of the social justice movements wherever they happen to be. Thank you very much and "hasta la victoria siempre!"

How dare you pay homage to the leader of a group that causes misery and despair to so many. I too am from the Quindio department the region where Marulanda was born and I am also of a peasant family (campesinos) that don't have much, but a small piece of beautiful land outside Armenia. I also dislike the fact that on many occasions the US has intervend in foreign affairs with no right and horrific results and also I don't oppose a fairer land or economic distribution incentive in Colombia. But I will never result to kidnapping, narcotics dealing and worst of all a war that has caused many innocent deaths just like the one in the 'Bojaya massacre', a small town in the Choco region where over 100 people 44 of which were children seeking refuge in the church were murdered by Marulanda's group the FARC in an attempt to take the town from the equally detested paramilitary forces. In case you don't know, Bojaya was an Afrocolombian town in the Choco therefore comments of a people's leader and that Marulanda looked after AfroColombian and native Indian interests is complete and utter rubbish, all they want is power and land to force ordinary people to grow coca and fund their lucrative cause. Look at this video of the massacre http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PT22zDQBQyY

and research it further to confirm its veracity.

There is no place for the Farc now, Marulanda committed atrocities to impose an ideology , which is just as bad as the imposing of capitalism by the US, but some sort of capitalism will always be needed as will some sort of socialism to ensure fairness and development, but extremes that result to killing should never ever be applauded!

A country such as Colombia with a rising middle class, an increasingly educated and social conscientious population as well as seemingly good economic prospects doesn't need an illegal organization that forces socialism through killing and kidnapping. What it needs is STABILITY and an end to the paramilitary and guerilla groups which is in its process thanks to the very person you slandered in this article. President Uribe, who although not perfect has given the most transparency of any Colombian government and is finally making way for Colombia's corrupt government to clean up its act as well as providing stability by using the rather dim Bush administration.

How ironic that we can only find examples of true popular courage in those who've lived simple, truthful lives repelling the forces of corporate American greed. I thank Dr. Petras and all the courageous writers who continue to challenge the status quo perspectives fed us by our traitorous keepers.

While a remarkable portrait of a people's hero, the underlying theme here is depressingly familiar: American-sponsored murder to perpetuate the myth and treachery of capitalism. Supportive as it has been of brutally repressive, imperialism-abetting authoritarian regimes around the world, the U. S.-organized, -funded, and -implemented campaigns against people amount to the most heinous and extensive war crime ever perpetrated. The long history -- in essence, our entire national history -- of the American government's interventionism, its scale, continuity, and intensity, completely dwarfs anything the Nazis did, anything undertaken by Stalin or Pol Pot, Genghis Khan, or the Tutsis. The fortunes spent alone on funding these operations -- over 200 years of designing better weapons, not just the hardware and personnel, but the insidious spin of lies, deceit, and propaganda -- numb the mind, completely obliterating the myth that "America spreads democracy."

The best way we the people can spread democracy will be to bring to justice to those who continue to perpetrate crimes against humanity. Of course, this is difficult when most Americans consent to these crimes: we all contribute to the slaughter and pillage of people and their land -- people who embody fundamental rights to peace, happiness, and self-determination -- by allowing the self-serving "leaders" of the corrupt nation that is the United States of America to continue to do their business. This business is not really ours, but with our complicity, the master villains use us against our brothers and sisters. Until the vast majority of Americans realize just how badly we've been duped, how injurious to our collective health all the consumption and militarism and mass manipulation and bloodshed has been, we'll continue to pay the steep price of self-destruction. Those who authorize, legislate, dispense, propagandize, repress, torture, and otherwise implement the means of imperialism must be held accountable, and that's up to all of us every moment of our lives. Let the heads begin rolling.
