i , too, evaluate that most journalists, media owners, editors knew the ruse.
after all, hadn't this strategem been employed since ancient times?
in canada, too, generals speak how well we're doing in afghanistan.
but if things were going good, u can bet politicos would crow.
if i remember correctly, media was mighty silent ab. the gulf of tonkin incident.
but the army or US gov't was mightily incensed that nam attacked US warships.
gov't and media continuously assume dif't roles. at one time it's the media demanding action, invasion, sanctions; at another time it's the government that does all the blustering while media falls into silence.thank u.

This is not news but another distraction from the "left" cheek of the corporate ass.

A percentage of reporters, the Pentagoon, retired generals, etc. etc. have performed the same for all previous administrations. Nothing new about the military and media in bed together. It's how wars are sold and sometimes unsold.

These retired military analysts informed the newsrooms of ties to lobby firms and a few recused themselves when an appearance might be a conflict of interest. Connection to a defense lobby is public information. Not mentioned are those military analysts who disagreed on air with BushCo strategy, analysts who were nonpaid, and analysts who did not attend the Pentagon's briefings program (now suspended thanks to NYT).

But, let us all give a big round of applause for the NYT's puny apology for reporting blunders and Judy Miller's "poor reporting" on Saddam and WMD that aided and abetted getting us into Iraq in the first place.

The only thing the NYT ever "reveals" is how stupid they believe the public to be, and apparently they are somewhat correct.

It's all part of defining Joe Blow's "enemy" as the "current administration," wouldn't want Joe to focus on the global corporatocracies that manipulate everything.

Great article, Bill. Although the NY Times claims that the major media outlets were 'unaware' of the staged military hands, I find it hard to believe. A second investigative report needs to be done with regards to administration and media influence, which is another large part of the US propaganda machine. This influence is so blatant in many circumstances, such as its reporting on Russia, that it is hard to ignore. It is known that the US, and much of the west, is anti-Russia, but how is it that all major media is also anti-Russia? (Russia is simply one example, many more can be drawn)
