I've always been in two minds whether paper ballots or computerized voting is preferable. You can still cheat with a paper ballot, but then when you're caught, you have no excuse. Whereas with technology, sure you can get accurate results-- provided that the machine is in perfect working condition, and provided that no one tampers with it. Both situations are easy enough to manipulate, so you can never be too sure.

I say go back to paper ballots-- sure, it's tedious, but at least you get a better chance of getting accurate results.

and to add just a bit more...
BKSH is the infant child of Burson - Masteller and the CEO would be the same Mark Penn who is the political adviser to Hillary Clinton. Oh, did I fail to mention... Mark Penn is Charlie Black BOSS . A new level of corruption? Is this the experience Hillary is referring to? Should we investigate? How about Obama Attacking HARD?

If you think the article above is disturbing, let me add a few more tidbits of information. John McCain's chief political advisor is Charles R. Black Jr. He is the current chairman of BKSH & Associates, a powerful Washington lobbying firm. BKSH's client list is long but here are a few corporations who pay BKSH for services. GM, JP Morgan, AT&T, United Technologies. What, United Technologies!! Hum, I think this should be investigated don't you?

HP said
"When I was a kid, my grandparetns in rural southern Michigan were volunteer election officers. The ballots were paper and they always printed up enough of them that we kids got to use the recycled extra ones for artwork."

Exactly. My parents did so as well. It was once considered our civic duty .We still have volunteers but they do not count votes.
Forget about all the questionable things that have happened since electronic voting began, for a second. Isn't a democratic republic where the votes are counted by a proprietary ,private contractor with out oversight an oxymoron. If Boss Tweed or Mayor Daley owned Diebold would this ongoing threat to our rights be so sanguinely dismissed as so much Art Bell fodder?

Isn't it obvious that this vote counting, as with many other things, isn't a matter of what you want?
It's a pie in the face. How does it taste?
What are you gonna do about it?
Vote them out?

Here in Oregon we have mail-in paper ballots, solely. Sure they are scanned by machine, but we have the paper trail.

In Canada they pull off elections with paper ballots and have them counted the same day - and we're talking millions of votes.

When I was a kid, my grandparetns in rural southern Michigan were volunteer election officers. The ballots were paper and they always printed up enough of them that we kids got to use the recycled extra ones for artwork.

All forms of machine voting are suspect. Mail-in paper ballots counted by supervised volunteers is the democratic way it should be done. We may need a Constututional Amendment mandating such (while we still have a Constitution.)

On the same subject, but slightly off topic, I wish to report that Lockheed Martin are the one of two preferred bidders to undertake the UK Census in 2010. Various assurances are being given about the safety and security of our responses. So much secure data has been lost by Government departments in stolen laptops and missing discs, we are yet to be persuaded especially in view of Lockheed Martin's close links to the US Government.
