James Fergusson is only showing greater sensitivity toward local norms which is an old British colonial tradition. Sir Olaf Caroe, the last British Governor of part of the part of the world is well known for his work, The Pathans 550 B.C.-A.D. 1957 in which he described Pakhtoon codes of hospitality and their centrality to Pathan identity as outlined in Pakhtoonwali. Incidentally, Sir Caroe's wikipedia entry also states:

After returning from India in 1947, he wrote extensively. His strategic ideas proved influential: At about this time there were those in Washington, looking for ways to secure the oil resources and practice containment in the Middle East. The formulations of Sir Olaf Caroe attracted attention and soon found favour in official circles. His article in the March 1949 number of Round Table and his 1951 book, Wells of Power, led to invitations from the State and Defence departments to visit Washington.

Also, a couple of voices on Afghanistan you won't be hearing on mainstream media (alongwith Pilger's) anytime soon: Malalai Joya and Noam Chomsky (clip starts at 0:17 and relevant comments are between 2:20 and 3:45).

“They remained charming and courteous throughout,” he wrote of one visit in February. “This is the beauty of malmastia, the Pashtun tradition of hospitality towards strangers. So long as he comes unarmed, even a mortal enemy can rely on a kind reception. The opportunity for dialogue that malmastia affords is unique.”

I wonder if there is any point to Mr Pilger's inclusion of this article excerpt? The unarmed have nothing to fear? So I suppose that the Korean Christian priest they executed must have been brandishing an Uzi. Right then.
What utter bullshit.
