mike,
I'm a Balouch and I disagree with you. The fault is not in the system or my country folk, rather it's in us, becasue my generation neglected eduction when others progressed.
Under Musharraf not only the balouch students have been given scholarships and 10,000 rupees monthly, but we are also joining the Pakistan Army.
And, I respect Musharraf for that. HE delivered while others just talked!

As long as it is called "The Islamic Republic of Pakistan," there is no hope for progress. A secular democratic republic, like India, has long been overdue! Non-Muslims, socialists, the Baloch,...are barred from positions of power and economic opprtunities! A very caste type situation. (of course US/UK like it!)

I'm sure Benazir is every bit as as Mr Whitney says she is. I'm old enough to remember her father and he certainly was! I wouldn't go along with Mr Whitney's slightly conspiratorial view of "ruling class" backscratching, though. I think Benazir is just a totally cynical opportunist who is seizing her opportunity. And Washington, of course, is clutching at any straw that comes within reach. For precisely that reason, I wouldn't set too much store by her "wish" to fight the Taliban, Islamo-whatevers and terorists of all hues and varieties. She will say anything to get Washington's backing to overthrow Musharraf. What she'll do if she actually gets into power is another day's work. She will not have forgotten that what sunk the general was that he snuggled up a bit too close to Washington and she will not make the same mistake.
