Maybe the school administration was cleverly trying to teach the students a bit of a foreign language: 'Seig Heil!' I guess the kids should be grateful they weren't tasered, gassed, or beaten. Yet. Imagine being for peace in America! The horror!

From Arthur Silber's website:

When Awareness Is a Crime, and Other Lessons From Morton West
[An Update about the latest developments added at the conclusion. It may be a good sign that the school board has postponed the vote on possible expulsion for these students. They may be feeling the pressure -- so if you haven't yet, sign the petition. Let's increase the pressure still more.]...."

the phrase 'sign the petition' is linked to:

School administrators would have no problem with protests that are about issues that have been basically co-opted into mainstream discourse i.e. there is a parallel track on which discontent on these issues--Sexual Liberation, Identity Politics, Ecology and Human Rights--can be shunted and then ignored or used, perversely, to shore up the same centers of power. As Thomas Pynchon said (in Gravity’s Rainbow), "If they can get you asking the wrong questions, they don’t have to worry about the answers."

Neither critical thinking nor expressing opinions contrary to the government line are tolerated these days in this always-fasicst country which is rapidly becoming a police-state fascsist country ... as the U.S. herd chews its yuppie cud and bleats contentedly for the most part.

“I thought the school would support us. They teach us civil rights, but then they pummel us down.”

That's because studying "civil rights" is safe; just dead words printed on dead trees; whereas living "civil rights" actually threatens to shake things up. School, like everything else in this forsaken culture, is a factory for cranking out more shitheads. No more, no less. Are we surprised?
