You think Mr Parson's approach is just too simplistic, Michael, how about this one?

Economics is so non-scientific and filled with unrecognized prejudices and prejudgements, it has no reply if someone asks: Why not just settle for a slightly lower rate of profit, and take care of needy, the environment, among other things, leaving the rest of the "free market" system to function as it will?

Is Mr Parsons sure that Mr de Boer didn't mean his comment a a joke? His name sounds Dutch and that would be typically Dutch humour!

As for potatoes, is Mr Parsons sure that the potatoes are of the same kind? Products of the earth reflect the earth from whence they came. Potatoes from Germany are not neceaasrily identical to potatoes grown in the UK and the same will be true even within countries. If a truckload of Bushmills whiskey destined for Scotland passes a truckload of Islay single malt heading for Northern Ireland, is that wasteful transport? The whole logic of the EU is to create a trading zone big enough that few produts need to imported from outside it but that within it, the market will be large enough to support a range of choice which will suit most consumer.
